Drug-drug interations
This paper goes into a deep dive on how psilocybin (and MDMA) interact with different drugs such as SSRIs, SERTs, Antipsychotics, and serotonin agonists.
Psilocybin and SSRI’s
SSRIs and SNRIs have been shown to decrease the effects of psilocybin up to 3 months following antidepressant discontinuation.
This research may indicate that psilocybin may have a ~50% reduction in therapeutic value when also taking anti-depressants. Please consult your doctor before stopping any antidepressant medications.
Neuronal Spine Growth
After a single dose of psilocybin administered to mice, researchers at Yale University found a ~10% increase in neuronal spine size and density, driven by an elevated spine formation rate. Research shows that a decrease in these spines lead to depression symptoms. (Link)
Spinal density does deplete after 30 days, indicating a repeated dose would be needed for prolonged mental health benefits.
Anti-inflammatory
Researchers have found anti-inflammatory effects with four psilocybin containing mushrooms. The mechanism is through the down-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
They found a decrease in specific cytokines such as TNF-a, IL-1b and IL-6. Cytokines are proteins that promote an immune reaction such as inflammation.
